Furnace or Heat Pump? Which Heating System to Choose?

Lots of people out there are wondering the most efficient and effective system of heating their home, and one of the questions that comes up is whether furnace or heat pump is the best heating system for your home.

A heat pump is a part of the heating system that uses the air from outdoors. It allows it to work as an air conditioner in the warmer climates and then a heater when it is cooler in the winter months. Heat pumps move warm air or cool air around depending on where it’s needed. During the cold climates, the pump can get heat from the ground or outdoor air to create warmth. When it is warmer, you can remove the air inside your house making you hot. This makes the air feel much cooler.

A furnace is designed to burn fuel in order to create warmth through the house. The heating system can use either gas or oil and there are even some models of furnace that use a combination of both. Having to use fuel is often seen as a big disadvantage.

The furnace works by burning fuel, and using heat exchangers and then blowers to distribute this heat around the area.

When Do You Need a Furnace, and When Do You Need a Heat Pump?

If you live in an area where it gets very cold then a heating system that includes a furnace might be needed, otherwise, there may not be the ability to heat your home! A heat pump can struggle in the coldest conditions.

If you live in an area where it gets cold, but not unbearable, during the winter, and where it gets hot in the summer, then a heat pump could be perfect due to the fact it can function as an air conditioner in the summer, too, allowing for the best control of temperatures.

Take the time to think about where you live and how this will impact performance before you go ahead and make a purchase.

Furnace or Heat PumpWhat to Consider When Choosing a Heating System?

Besides the consideration of whether a furnace or heat pump can heat your home better, there are a few other things to consider.

  • Think about energy efficiency. If you’re using a furnace you will have to use fuel to create the heat. This can be a very costly way to do things and isn’t best for the environment. Some energy is still used by a heat pump but as the main thing it is doing is transferring heat from one place to another, it is not likely to use as much.
  • Air quality is another really important factor. Burning fossil fuels in a furnace will reduce the quality of the air in the area, which is a big negative. Heat pumps don’t use combustion so there aren’t harmful emissions made as a result. Some local authorities are starting to introduce guidelines regarding the heating system to make sure that you keep your emissions low as it is best for the local community to have a better quality of air rather than adding to the pollution.
  • The price of a furnace tends to be lower initially, and they tend to last longer, with a lifespan of up to 20 years. However, they may need to be twinned with a separate air conditioning unit as they can’t cool through the hot months. This can mean a cost that could be saved if you introduced a pump instead.
  • Though heat pumps are more of an investment to get installed, they are likely to have some money on fuel costs and on having to introduce cooling methods during the warmer months, too.
  • If you suffer from dry skin, it is also worth remembering that the less natural method of using a furnace can make this worse as the air is not humid. As you can see, there is an awful lot to weigh up.

Opt For Heating and Air Conditioning Repair

If you are experiencing any issues with your air conditioner or need advice on a problem, head to heating and air conditioning repair. Heat pump repairs can be required from time to time, as these products do a lot of work. It could be that your heat pump is moving heat around for most of the year.

Gas-fired furnaces might need less in the way of repairs as they are used for less of the year and tend to have less complicated parts, but their lack of efficiency means they still may not be the best choice for you. Pay close attention to the weather and evaluate what will be best for the location you live in.
